Claude Code for Visual FoxPro — AI Tools for Legacy Software

Visual FoxPro was released in 1984 and discontinued by Microsoft in 2007. Yet thousands of VFP applications are still in production globally — from ERP systems to inventory management, from local databases to SQL Server integrations. The problem? Modern AI tools do not know VFP.

We solved this problem with claude-vfp-skills — a set of specialized skills and prompts that enable Claude Code to work efficiently with Visual FoxPro code.

What is Visual FoxPro and why it still matters

VFP (Visual FoxPro) is a programming language and database management system originally developed by Fox Software and later acquired by Microsoft. It was extremely popular in the 1990s and 2000s, especially for business applications: accounting, inventory management, invoicing, ERP.

Although Microsoft discontinued it in 2007 (extended support until 2015), the VFP ecosystem is surprisingly alive. Thousands of critical applications run on VFP in production, and the developer community — while smaller — remains active.

  • ERP and accounting applications at hundreds of companies in Romania
  • Inventory management systems in retail and manufacturing
  • Custom applications developed over 20+ years
  • SQL Server integrations for large data volumes

The challenge: making AI understand a 1984 language

Modern AI models — GPT, Claude, Gemini — are trained on popular languages: Python, JavaScript, C#, Java. Visual FoxPro is almost absent from training data. This means:

  • AI confuses VFP syntax with other languages (xBase, dBase, Clipper)
  • It does not know VFP-specific built-in functions (TABLEUPDATE, CURSORSETPROP, SCATTER/GATHER)
  • It generates code that compiles but does not work correctly in the VFP context
  • It does not understand the VFP data model: cursors, work areas, temporary relations

For a team that uses VFP daily, this makes AI almost unusable without adaptation.

The solution: claude-vfp-skills

We created a set of Claude Code Skills — configuration files that give Claude specialized knowledge about Visual FoxPro. This is not fine-tuning or additional training — it is structured context that guides AI to generate correct VFP code.

What it includes

  • Complete VFP syntax — commands, functions, operators, with correct examples
  • Working patterns — how to open a table, how to perform TABLEUPDATE correctly, how to manage transactions
  • Anti-patterns — mistakes AI frequently makes and how to avoid them (for example: REPLACE without GO TOP, SELECT without explicit alias)
  • SQL Server integration — SQLCONNECT, SQLEXEC, remote views, conventions for stored procedures
  • Gestime ERP patterns — patterns specific to our ERP application, reusable by anyone with similar VFP applications

FoxPro since 1993. Visual FoxPro since day one.

Our experience with the FoxPro platform doesn't start with VFP — it starts with FoxPro 2.6, in 1993. We were there from the first Visual FoxPro release and grew alongside the language. For over 30 years we've been building business systems on this platform.

We're not talking about small projects. We delivered large-scale solutions, in production at national level:

  • Accounting + Inventory + Payroll — fully integrated systems with thousands of users, still operational today
  • Management software (Gestime ERP) — our main application, built on VFP with a SQL Server backend, used daily for job tracking, time management, invoicing and reporting across the entire Geseidl group
  • Pharmacy management — inventory management systems for individual pharmacies, with stock management, prescriptions and ANAF reporting
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing — software for pharmaceutical production facilities, with batch traceability, quality control and GMP reporting
  • Pharmaceutical wholesale (national chain) — national-scale pharmaceutical distribution system with multi-warehouse management, logistics and integration with retail pharmacy networks

This three-decade experience — not just with the language, but with real, complex projects in regulated industries — allowed us to build claude-vfp-skills with a precision that only real practice can provide. These are not generalizations from documentation — they are patterns tested in production, daily, for years.

How it helps the global VFP community

claude-vfp-skills is open-source and can be used by anyone working with Visual FoxPro. The benefits:

  • VFP developers can use Claude Code as a code assistant with correct results
  • Teams maintaining legacy applications can accelerate debugging and modernization
  • Companies migrating from VFP can use AI for analysis and documentation of existing code
  • The VFP community gets a free tool that makes AI accessible to their ecosystem

Modernization does not necessarily mean replacing what works. Sometimes it means bringing new tools to the existing world. That is what we do with claude-vfp-skills — we bring AI to the VFP ecosystem without asking anyone to give up what they have built over 20 years.
